Clinical Information for VAWA

VAWA Mental Health Evaluations

A conversation about experiences relevant to a VAWA matter and their effects on mental health.

The Requested Assessment

Understanding the Clinical Purpose

If your attorney has asked for a VAWA mental health evaluation, you may have questions about what you will be asked to describe. The appointment concerns personal experiences and their effects on mental health. It does not determine which immigration request you should make or replace advice from the attorney handling your matter.

Experiences and Their Effects

Describing What Has Changed

Experiences connected with abuse can affect ordinary parts of a day, including sleep, concentration, and comfort around other people. You can describe the changes you have noticed without trying to give them a clinical name. The conversation may consider what daily life was like before those experiences and what feels different now.

  • Changes in sleep or concentration
  • Worry during everyday activities
  • Effects on relationships and responsibilities
  • Support you currently rely on

Making Room to Speak

Questions About the Pace

Talking about a painful relationship can bring up uncertainty about where to start. Tell your therapist when a question is unclear or a topic feels difficult to discuss. You can ask about pauses and how to approach sensitive material before describing it. Preparing for the appointment does not mean rehearsing a polished account or memorizing your experiences. Bring questions about the assessment, including anything you want clarified before discussing personal history.

Evaluations

Our Clinical Immigration Evaluations

Our immigration evaluations are conducted by a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with experience in trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. Evaluations are available in English or Spanish, so you can discuss these personal experiences in either language.

Practical Appointment Details

Time and Place for the Conversation

For most immigration assessments, allow 2 to 3 hours of appointment time. For an in-person appointment, come to 191 Sand Creek Road, Suite 230, Brentwood, CA 94513. A video evaluation is also an option while you are located in California. If meeting online, think about a private setting where you can speak without someone overhearing your account.

Before You Arrive

Preparing without Sending Sensitive Details

Check with your attorney about the evaluation type and the information they want addressed. Gather photo identification, attorney contact information, and requested documents. Our preparation page explains these practical items. If you are unsure whether a document is needed, ask before sending it. Email should not include a description of abuse or other clinical history.

Clinical and Legal Roles

Keeping the Responsibilities Clear

We do not provide legal representation or legal advice. Your immigration attorney determines legal eligibility. Your therapist's role concerns mental health information related to the experiences identified for evaluation. Ask your attorney questions about legal requirements, documents for the case, and how clinical information relates to their request. You do not need to make those legal decisions during a clinical conversation.

A General Inquiry

Asking About a VAWA Appointment

To discuss a VAWA evaluation request, call (925) 331-0457 or email info@heartnmindcounseling.com. Mention the type of evaluation and your preferred language rather than sensitive personal history. You can ask about scheduling and the clinical appointment before arranging it. If your attorney needs specific information from the practice, ask how to coordinate that question without sharing clinical details by email.

Common Questions

Is a VAWA Evaluation Ongoing Therapy?

This appointment is a clinical assessment for an immigration matter, rather than an ongoing therapy session. Ask about the distinction before scheduling.

Who Decides Whether VAWA Applies to My Case?

Your immigration attorney identifies the legal requirements and determines eligibility. The clinical evaluation does not make that decision.

How Can I Prepare for Sensitive Questions?

Read the preparation page, gather requested materials, and ask your therapist how to discuss difficult topics or request a pause.
