Extreme Hardship Mental Health Evaluations
Mental health information about family circumstances your immigration attorney has identified.
The Attorney Identifies the Circumstances
Starting with the Requested Family Assessment
An extreme hardship mental health evaluation addresses effects connected with separation or relocation, as identified by an immigration attorney. The person being evaluated may be a family member rather than the person making an immigration request. Ask the attorney who the assessment concerns and what circumstances they want considered before you contact the practice about an appointment.
Life Within a Family
Responsibilities and Relationships That Matter
A conversation about hardship can include daily routines and the relationships that shape them. Describe responsibilities in concrete terms, including how family members depend on each other. The clinical focus is on mental health effects connected with the circumstances presented, not on deciding what qualifies under immigration law. An attorney can explain the legal questions separately.
- Changes in family responsibilities
- Emotional effects of possible separation
- Concerns connected with relocation
- Sources of practical and personal support
Present and Possible Changes
Explaining the Scenario without Guessing
Your attorney can clarify whether the evaluation should address separation, relocation, or particular family circumstances. Bring that explanation rather than trying to choose a scenario yourself. During the clinical discussion, distinguish what is happening now from changes you are concerned about. It is reasonable to say when something is uncertain or when you cannot answer a question yet.
Evaluations
Our Clinical Immigration Evaluations
Our immigration evaluations are conducted by a California Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with experience in trauma, anxiety, depression, and relationship issues. Evaluations are available in English or Spanish, so you can discuss these personal experiences in either language.

An Office or Video Appointment
Most evaluations for immigration matters take 2 to 3 hours. Our in-person location is 191 Sand Creek Road, Suite 230, Brentwood, CA 94513. Video appointments require the person being evaluated to be in California. Before choosing the format, consider where that person can discuss private family information without interruptions or being overheard by others in the household.
Preparing Family Information
What to Confirm with Your Attorney
Review the preparation page for identification, attorney contact information, and requested documents. Ask who should attend and which family records are relevant to the requested assessment. A list of current responsibilities may help you explain the situation, but it does not replace the clinical conversation. Ask how sensitive documents should be handled before attempting to send them by email.
Understanding the Boundary
No Legal Eligibility Decision
We do not provide legal representation or legal advice. Your immigration attorney determines legal eligibility. The evaluation concerns mental health, not a determination that hardship meets a legal standard. Your attorney identifies the relevant family member and the circumstances that need attention. Direct questions about legal categories or requirements to that attorney so the clinical appointment stays focused on the requested mental health assessment.

Common Questions
Who Should Be Evaluated?
Ask your attorney to identify the person and the family circumstances the clinical assessment should address.
Does the Assessment Decide What Counts as Extreme Hardship?
No. The practice supplies clinical mental health information; your attorney determines legal eligibility.
Should I Email Family Records Before Calling?
Do not email clinical details. Ask the practice about requested documents and how to handle sensitive material first.
