Therapy for Overthinking
For the thoughts that circle back long after a decision is already made.
A Mind That Will Not Settle
When One Thought Leads to Another
A decision gets replayed from another angle, a comment from earlier returns uninvited, or tomorrow's conversation gets rehearsed repeatedly. Ordinary choices can feel heavier when every answer raises another question. Overthinking can leave you foggy or stuck even after spending considerable time on a decision.
At night, a quiet room may leave more room for these thoughts. You might replay a conversation instead of sleeping, then feel tired the next day.
Where Sessions Begin
Describing the Loop in Your Own Words
You can describe a recent decision you kept revisiting or a moment you replayed for hours. Your therapist asks how these thoughts affect your sleep, attention, and relationships. No particular label is needed.
Some people notice the pattern after social situations, others before making choices. Discussing when it starts can help shape what you work on.

Ways to Practice Noticing
Steps You Might Try Between Sessions
Alongside conversation, you can ask our therapists about small exercises to try during the week.
- Naming a thought as a thought rather than a fact
- Setting a short, specific window to think through a worry on purpose
- Practicing a brief mindfulness exercise when a decision starts to loop
- Writing down a replayed thought instead of turning it over in your mind
- Noticing which times of day the pattern tends to appear
A Common Effect
When Replaying Decisions Affects Rest
Replaying conversations at bedtime may leave you tired before the next day begins. You can bring one recent night into a session and describe what kept returning.
The conversation can include how you respond to those thoughts, what makes them louder, and the routines surrounding rest. You do not need to have resolved the worry beforehand.
A Place to Slow Down
Talking Through a Decision Out Loud
Saying a looping thought out loud gives you something specific to examine. Our therapists can ask about the evidence behind a worry and separate a decision from predictions about what might happen afterward.
You can consider what is within your control and when further thinking is no longer adding information. Optional practice between appointments can focus on one recurring pattern.
