How to Choose a Therapist in Brentwood
A practical list of questions for comparing therapists without rankings or broad claims.
A Personal Decision
Begin With the Conversation You Want to Have
Choosing a therapist is personal. A useful starting point is identifying what you want help discussing and what would make it easier to speak honestly. You can ask any practice the same direct questions about training, approach, language, location, fees, and scheduling. Clear answers make it easier to compare options without relying on rankings or broad claims.
License or Registration
Ask About the Clinician’s Professional Title
Ask whether the therapist is licensed or a registered associate. At Heart'N Mind Counseling, a therapist on our team is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, California License #120707. Our therapists are registered AMFTs, and a therapist on our team is a registered APCC. Registered associate. Provides services under the clinical supervision of a licensed clinician.
- Is the clinician licensed or registered
- What is the license or registration number
- How does clinical supervision work for an associate
Approach in Plain Words
Ask What Sessions May Actually Include
Terms such as CBT, DBT, EMDR, family systems, EFT, and Gottman Method principles describe ways clinicians organize their work. Ask a therapist to explain how an approach relates to your concern and what conversation in a typical session may sound like. A label alone does not tell you how it will feel to work together.
Language Preference
Confirm the Language Used in Sessions
If speaking Spanish matters, ask who provides the service you need in Spanish. Your therapist works in English and Spanish. Your therapist works with teens and parents in English and Spanish. Naming the preference before scheduling helps the practice offer accurate choices rather than assuming that every clinician provides every service in both languages.
Where You Meet
Compare In-Person and Video Appointments
Ask whether appointments are in person, by video, or available in both formats. Our in-person sessions are at 191 Sand Creek Road, Suite 230, Brentwood, CA 94513. Video sessions require each client to be physically located in California. Consider privacy, internet reliability, travel, and who else may attend.
Cost and Paperwork
Ask About Fees, Insurance, and Superbills
Heart'N Mind Counseling is not in network with insurance. Superbills are available on request for PPO, HSA, or flexible benefit plans, without a promise of reimbursement. Contact us for couples and marriage counseling fees. Other session fees are shared during the free consultation. Major credit cards, FSA cards, and HSA cards are accepted.
Personal Fit
Notice How Questions Are Received
A free consultation is a short phone conversation, not a full therapy session. Notice whether answers are understandable and whether you feel able to ask follow-up questions. You can ask about experience with the concern, the first appointment, availability, the 24-hour cancellation policy, and clinician fit before deciding what you want to schedule.
Our Answers
How Heart’N Mind Describes Its Practice
The practice has four clinicians and one office in Brentwood, with video sessions across California. Services include individual, couples, family, teen, and talk-based sex therapy, plus clinical mental health evaluations for immigration matters. Call (925) 331-0457 or email info@heartnmindcounseling.com without clinical details to request a free 15-minute phone consultation.
A choice of therapist can involve more than availability. Ask what the clinician focuses on and how that work relates to the concern you have described. You can also ask about language, format, fees, and professional credentials. If an answer raises another question, request an explanation in ordinary words before deciding whether to schedule with that person.
